Bitcoin Seeks Safe Haven as Global Debt Crisis Deepens
Global financial markets are witnessing a significant shift in investor behavior, driven by concerns over the purchasing power of fiat currencies and the increasing reliance on monetary expansion to manage government debt. CryptoMan Ran, founder of Crypto Banter, identifies this phenomenon as the 'debasement trade', where investors seek assets capable of preserving value despite rising inflation risks.
The recent surge in Bitcoin's price to over $80,000, a 28% gain for the month, coincided with a weaker US dollar and renewed interest in assets perceived as alternatives to monetary and fiscal risks. The 90-day correlation between Bitcoin and gold has reached a record high, while their 30-day correlation is approximately 0.8.
The growth of government debt is a pressing concern, particularly in the United States, where the national debt surpassed $40 trillion for the first time on August 19. This milestone has sparked concerns over the cost of financing persistent deficits and the government's ability to stabilize its debt trajectory over the long term.
The bond market is reflecting these concerns, with the US 30-year Treasury yield reaching a high not seen since 2007. The Peterson Foundation noted that net interest costs are expected to equal around 3.3% of US GDP in 2026 and could rise to 4.6% within a decade if current trends continue.
