The U.S. government's growing debt burden has revived interest in Bitcoin as a potential store of value, according to Robbie Mitchnick, BlackRock's global head of digital assets.

Mitchnick pointed out that concerns about the nation's fiscal sustainability are leading some investors to consider alternatives outside the traditional monetary system, such as gold and Bitcoin. The U.S. gross federal debt surpassed $40 trillion on August 18, up from approximately $19.95 trillion in 2017.

The Congressional Budget Office projects a $1.9 trillion deficit for fiscal 2026, with the annual shortfall potentially expanding to $3.1 trillion by 2036 under current law. Mitchnick believes that these rising debt levels could support assets like Bitcoin and gold, as investors seek scarce stores of value in response to concerns about fiat currency purchasing power.

Bitcoin's recent price surge is attributed to a combination of factors, including ETF inflows, short covering, a weaker dollar, and changes in Treasury bond markets. Mitchnick noted that the cryptocurrency's distinct nature as an emerging store of value has allowed it to rise even when other assets struggled during market volatility.
