Bitcoin Self-Custody Shines Amidst Coldcard Hack

A recent breach of Coldcard hardware wallets has resulted in approximately $130 million in stolen Bitcoin. The exploit, which drained around 2,100 BTC, occurred due to a firmware bug introduced in March 2021 that made private keys guessable.

However, amidst the hack, over 233,000 BTC, worth about $15 billion at current prices, was quietly moved out of long-term holder wallets and into safer areas. This migration is seen as a testament to the resilience of Bitcoin's self-custody model.

Casa CEO Nick Neuman notes that some of this movement came from Coldcard users migrating to multisig wallets, while others came from holders on Ledger and Trezor who used the hack as an opportunity to upgrade their security. This highlights the importance of self-custody in protecting against such breaches.
