Bitcoin Shatters Summer Slump with Third-Best August Ever
Bitcoin defied its notorious summer slump this year, delivering one of its best Augusts on record. According to Bitwise's European Head of Research, André Dragosch, the cryptocurrency saw returns of 25% in August.
This is only the third-best August for Bitcoin since its inception, with the other two being 2017 when it rose by nearly 66%, and 2013 with a gain of close to 31%. Dragosch noted that there was no 'summer lull' this year.
The catalyst for this surge is attributed to several factors. Firstly, the U.S. Treasury Department announced it would more than double its government debt repurchases due to fixed income markets under pressure and yields surging to levels not seen in nearly 20 years. This move reduces the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets like Bitcoin and gold.
Investors responded positively to this news, flooding into Bitcoin as a result. Additionally, President Donald Trump's comments on the crypto Clarity Act, urging lawmakers to pass it, also contributed to the surge in demand. The digital asset industry has long called for clear rules on how regulators should treat Bitcoin, stablecoins, and other cryptocurrencies.
