Bitcoin Short Squeeze Sends Price to $81,000 Amid $140M Liquidations

Bitcoin surged to $81,000 after experiencing a textbook short squeeze that resulted in $140 million in liquidations across the crypto derivatives market. The move was fueled by traders betting on lower prices getting caught offside and their forced buybacks becoming rocket fuel for the rally.

The mechanics of the squeeze involved short liquidations occurring when traders holding bearish leveraged positions couldn't meet margin requirements as prices rose, forcing exchanges to close positions at market price. This pushed prices higher, triggering more liquidations, creating a self-reinforcing cycle.

Certain sessions saw short positions account for up to 80% of total liquidation volume, with major platforms like Binance, Bybit, and Hyperliquid being hit the hardest. One particularly violent session saw $280 million in short position liquidations out of a total $409 million.

The squeeze was not an isolated event but rather part of a larger trend that included significant capital flows into Bitcoin spot ETFs, with at least $232 million entering on a single day and cumulative inflows topping $1 billion over several days. Macro conditions also played a role, with US Treasury bond buybacks pushing yields lower and making risk assets like Bitcoin relatively more attractive.

On-chain data indicated conviction among longer-term holders, as long-term holder supply increased even as exchange balances declined, typically indicating accumulation rather than distribution. Coins were moving off exchanges and into cold storage, reducing the available supply for sellers.
