Bitcoin Slips Below $79K Amid US-Iran Tensions, Rising Oil Prices
Bitcoin's price dropped below $79,000 on Thursday as escalating tensions between the US and Iran fueled inflation fears and put pressure on cryptocurrency markets.
The US-Iran hostilities intensified with Iran claiming it struck 10 ships near the Strait of Hormuz, prompting a response from the US that sank five Iranian oil tankers. Brent crude prices surged above $101 per barrel for the first time since late July, adding to inflation concerns.
Higher oil prices typically stoke interest rate expectations, making speculative assets like Bitcoin less attractive to investors. This trend is particularly concerning for Bitcoin given its historical underperformance during Federal Reserve rate hike cycles.
The Japanese yen also added to the pressure on Bitcoin, hitting its strongest level against the dollar since February and causing a 6.5% increase in value. Record short positioning on the yen, with positions hovering above $5 trillion, puts traders at risk if the yen continues to strengthen.
