Bitcoin Slumps Amid Hawkish Speech from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh
Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies fell in value on August 25 after Kevin Warsh, Chair of the US Federal Reserve, delivered a hawkish speech at the Jackson Hole conference. The event, which attracts financial players to discuss macroeconomic policy, has historically influenced market trends.
The Fed's inflation target is 2%, but current PCE inflation stands at 3.7% in the last year and 4.1% annualized over the past six months. Warsh noted that several signs indicate the current financial conditions remain non-restrictive, including friendly lending standards and liberal credit markets.
Warsh emphasized the Fed's commitment to achieving its inflation target, stating 'we must be confident that underlying inflation is moving to our objective, clearly and at sufficient speed.' He also discouraged the market from relying on the Fed for forward guidance, saying this strategy has 'overstayed its welcome.'
Following the speech, investors adopted a risk-off attitude, causing Bitcoin's price to drop below $80,000. Long liquidations in the cryptocurrency market totaled $350.94 million, with Ethereum and XRP prices also falling.
