Bitcoin Slumps as Asian Chip Sell-Off Spills into US Markets
Bitcoin's price slipped to ten-day lows on Tuesday as the Asian chip sell-off spilled over into US markets, causing a broader risk-off move. The cryptocurrency's trading weakened alongside US market futures and semiconductor stocks led the reversal in Asia, with South Korea's KOSPI closing down 10.8% in a day.
The decline accelerated, forcing long positions to be liquidated quickly, with CoinGlass reporting over $510 million wiped out over roughly 24 hours. This level of liquidation is consistent with sharp downside moves where stop-losses and margin calls cascade rapidly.
The pressure on Bitcoin was not isolated to crypto, as semiconductor losses spilled from Asia into US trading, amplifying the day's bearish tone. In the US, the Nasdaq Composite was down more than 1% at the time of writing, with Micron Technologies falling by over 10%.
The move has sparked concerns about the durability of hyperscaler capital expenditure, particularly in AI infrastructure spending. Investors are reassessing whether the economics of large-scale AI builds can justify the magnitude and pace of spending.
