Bitcoin Slumps to February Lows as Market Panic Sets In
The cryptocurrency market took a sharp downturn on Sunday evening, with Bitcoin plummeting to levels not seen since February. This development has come as a blow to those who had been expecting a significant surge in prices.
Bitcoin's price dropped by 12% within a 24-hour period and is now down 20% from the previous week. Ethereum also took a hit, losing 21% of its value over the past day and erasing all its gains made this year. In fact, it has now fallen 3% below its January 1st price.
The situation in Japan may have contributed to this market downturn. The Bank of Japan's decision to raise interest rates last week led to a strengthening yen, which in turn caused the Nikkei stock index to drop significantly. This economic turmoil has spread to the U.S., with the Nasdaq plummeting over 5% within two days.
The Federal Reserve's move to hold interest rates steady but express uncertainty about a potential rate cut in September may have also played a role in the market's decline. Traders had been anticipating a rate cut, and the Fed's hesitation has led them to price in a 100% chance of lower U.S. rates in September.
