Bitcoin Soars 20% as Treasury Intervention Sparks Gold Rush
Bitcoin and gold saw a significant surge in value this week, with both assets benefiting from a combination of factors. On Wednesday, the U.S. Treasury Department announced plans to increase its buybacks of long-term Treasurys, which sent investors fleeing from the dollar and into alternative assets like gold and Bitcoin.
The price of gold rose 2% on Wednesday, reaching $4,661, while Bitcoin jumped more than 20% for the week. The cryptocurrency's surge was also fueled by President Donald Trump's call to Congress to pass the Clarity Act, a crypto-friendly bill that would ease regulations and allow companies to raise capital from the public.
Trump has been a long-time supporter of the crypto industry, and his comments at a White House conference on Wednesday were seen as a boost for Bitcoin. The Treasury's actions also raised concerns about inflation and the national debt, which surpassed $40 trillion on Wednesday. As investors sought safe-haven assets, they poured money into gold and Bitcoin.
The surge in Bitcoin was also driven by the forced liquidation of short positions, as investors who had bet against the cryptocurrency were forced to buy back their positions at higher prices. By Friday, over $4 billion in bearish crypto positions had been liquidated, adding fuel to the rally.
