Bitcoin Soars 23% Amid Government Intervention and Falling Yields
Bitcoin has surged more than 20% this week, its best performance in over three years. This sudden increase coincided with stocks falling and gold rising by about 5%. The combination of these events was sparked by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's decision to double the size of planned buybacks for some longer-dated Treasurys.
The 30-year yield dropped by 9 basis points on Wednesday, while Bitcoin jumped 7% and gold rallied 4%. However, by Friday, the 30-year yield had largely recovered its losses. Meanwhile, Bitcoin continued to surge, adding over 10%, while gold increased by another 2%.
Coinage founder Zack Guzman described this week's performance as a 'debasement trade.' He explained that when governments intervene in markets, money flows towards assets like Bitcoin. This trend is consistent with previous weeks where Bitcoin gained more than 15% while stocks fell, gold rose, and the dollar declined.
