Bitcoin Soars 8% Amid Short Squeeze and Regulatory Optimism
Bitcoin has made an impressive comeback after months of decline, surging nearly 8% in value and reaching its highest point since early June at around $69,500. This sudden increase pushed the largest cryptocurrency above its 100- and 200-day moving averages, a significant technical gauge for traders.
The catalyst behind this rally is largely attributed to a short squeeze, where forced buying from short sellers accelerated the rebound in prices. According to Coinglass data, over $1 billion of Bitcoin short positions were liquidated in about an hour, underscoring the speed and magnitude of the reversal.
Traders had been building protection around $60,000 while positioning for a rise toward $70,000 in the Bitcoin options market. The White House meeting between President Trump and crypto executives from firms including Coinbase Global Inc., Payward Inc., and Blockchain.com Group Holdings Inc. added to optimism about an administration that has sought to promote a more industry-friendly regulatory framework for digital assets.
Falling borrowing costs also contributed to the rally, with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent making a fresh attempt to rein in long-term borrowing costs from multiyear highs. This sent Treasury yields and the dollar lower, improving the backdrop for higher-risk assets like Bitcoin.
