Bitcoin Soars as 'Debasement Board' Takes Hold Amid Regulatory Shift

Wintermute, a quant trading firm, has dubbed the recent surge in Bitcoin's price as a 'debasement board.' The term refers to the asset's best week since March 2024. According to the company's weekly market update on X, six weeks of compressed volatility had stacked short liquidation levels above Bitcoin's range.

The Treasury's announcement of increased long-end bond buybacks triggered a shift in the market, with Bitcoin clearing the ceiling and turning the short book into buyers. A record $2.7 billion in shorts were liquidated across the move from $63,000 to $79,000, as per CoinGlass.

The report highlights that May's similar run to these price levels lacked structural sponsorship, but this week's combined $2.6 billion in ETF flows gave the advance the structural sponsorship it needed. The regulatory story is now independent of the Clarity Act's cloture vote, according to Wintermute.
