Bitcoin Soars Past $79,000 as Wall Street and Washington Converge
Bitcoin's price surged past $79,000 on Friday, driven by heavy institutional buying and favorable economic signals. The catalyst for the rally was the US Treasury announcement and President Donald Trump's remarks about the potential for the government to buy Bitcoin. However, Bitcoin spot demand had already been showing signs of growth in the days leading up to the event.
Over $1 billion in institutional money flowed into Bitcoin through spot exchange-traded funds (ETFs) over two days, with net inflows totaling $517 million on August 19 and $606 million on August 20. According to Julio Moreno of CoinShares, ETFs purchased approximately 7,500 Bitcoins in a single day, their highest daily level since April.
Moreno noted that similar periods of demand growth have historically been followed by a median 23% Bitcoin gain over the next two months. However, he cautioned that Bitcoin may not benefit as much as other digital assets from the Clarity Act legislation, which would create a federal regulatory framework for digital assets and spell out the roles of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission and the Securities and Exchange Commission.
Traders who had bet against the rally paid a steep price, with more than $4 billion in crypto short positions liquidated over two to three days. Bitcoin shorts alone accounted for roughly $2.75 billion during the initial squeeze.
