Bitcoin Soars Past $81,000 Amid Treasury Bond Buyback News
Bitcoin's price surged past $81,000 in early trading on Tuesday, marking its highest level since May, according to Reuters. Although it has since dropped back to around $79,000, the cryptocurrency is still up 23% so far in August.
The rally comes after a pair of moves by the Trump administration that have investors looking for alternative investments like gold and Bitcoin. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced last week that the government would significantly increase its buybacks of long-dated Treasury bonds, which could push down long-term bond yields and impact borrowing costs.
Geoff Kendrick, global head of digital assets research at Standard Chartered, noted that this type of news is 'exactly the type of thing bitcoin loves' due to its decentralized nature. He added that Bitcoin's design allows investors to avoid government intervention.
The Trump administration has also been meeting with prominent crypto leaders, including Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong and Kraken co-CEO Arjun Sethi, to discuss a clearer regulatory framework for cryptocurrencies.
