Bitcoin Soars to $79,000 as Short Squeeze Fuels Crypto Rally
Bitcoin has staged a remarkable comeback, surging to around $79,000 on August 19 and gaining roughly 23 percent in value. This impressive move was triggered by a policy signal from Washington, but it was the massive wave of short liquidations that gave the rally its real force.
The US Treasury's announcement to expand liquidity-supporting buybacks of longer-dated government securities provided a macroeconomic catalyst for the market. At the same time, a White House meeting with crypto executives boosted sentiment and led to a sharp move in prices.
According to Coin Metrics, several factors converged to create this perfect storm: unusually low volatility, elevated positioning in derivatives markets, and the Washington policy signal. As a result, traders betting on falling prices were forced to unwind their positions, leading to over $1.6 billion in short liquidations within 24 hours.
The rally extended beyond Bitcoin, with Ether and other higher-beta cryptocurrencies benefiting from renewed risk appetite and widespread short covering. The combination of higher crypto prices, stronger volumes, and increased volatility could provide a more favorable earnings environment for listed crypto exchanges and brokerages.
