Bitcoin Spot Trading Volume Slumps to Two-Year Low Amid Summer Lull
Bitcoin's spot trading volume has reached its lowest sustained level since November 2023, averaging around $2.2 billion per day in July.
This is according to research firm K33, which attributes the current environment to seasonal patterns that typically characterize the summer months in cryptocurrency markets.
The market's reduced volatility has discouraged active trading and reinforced a cycle of low activity, with open interest in Bitcoin futures on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange approaching multi-year lows and perpetual futures contracts plateauing near 300,000 BTC.
Several exchange platforms have been impacted by the drop in transaction volumes, which has placed pressure on their revenues. Notably, BitMEX announced plans to shut down operations in September after reviewing its business model.
