Bitcoin Staking Goes Live on Stacks with Genesis Bond
Bitcoin staking has arrived on Stacks, marking a major milestone in the decentralized finance (DeFi) space. The Genesis Bond, which involved four institutions, allowed them to bond 250 BTC and expect rewards by September 17. Three of the participants - 21Shares, HashKey Cloud, and UTXO Management - bonded their BTC under self-custody, while Sypher Capital participated through liquid staking via StackingDAO.
The Proof of Transfer (PoX) mechanism, active since January 2021, has distributed over 4,200 BTC - equivalent to more than $500 million - among participants. Genesis Bond bonders will access this yield source without any counterparty holding their funds or a slashing mechanism. The worst-case scenario is receiving no rewards, not losing the principal.
Fireblocks, an enterprise platform that secures over $5 trillion in digital asset transfers annually, has deepened its integration with Stacks to offer institutional clients access to Bitcoin Staking through custody and compliance tools. This development is part of Stacks' roadmap, which also includes scaling infrastructure improvements and a Bitcoin-native financial layer.
