Bitcoin Supply Ages as Long-Term Holders Retain Positions
Bitcoin's on-chain data reveals that more and more of its supply is moving into older holding categories, rather than returning to the market. According to Alphractal and CryptoQuant, coins are aging across multiple holding bands, indicating that many investors have retained their positions during the current consolidation period.
Data from Alphractal shows how ownership has changed across different holding periods, with coins held for more than six months often remaining in wallets for years. Joao Wedson notes that these longer-term holders tend to reduce their positions only after the market enters a stronger bullish phase, while shorter-term holders accumulate later and exit during bear market conditions.
CryptoQuant data shows a similar pattern in Bitcoin's Realized Cap across UTXO Age Bands. The chart measures realized capitalization by the length of time coins have remained unspent while tracking Bitcoin's market price from 2021 through July 2026. Zakariya Sharif notes that this trend indicates Bitcoin's holder base is growing, rather than shrinking, as coins acquired during previous market phases continue to age rather than being sold immediately.
