Bitcoin Surge Driven by Short Covering Rather Than True Value

Bitcoin's recent surge of 23% in a single week is its largest weekly gain in over three years, according to Bloomberg reporter Emily Nicolle. This comes after US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen's announcement to increase the long-term national debt purchase program, sparking concerns about American debt and dollar depreciation. As a result, investors turned to alternative assets like Bitcoin.

Nicolle notes that while this catalyst has been sufficient to propel Bitcoin past $80,000, it is unlikely to sustain a true bull market. The narrative of Bitcoin as a tool for hedging against inflation and the dollar still lacks persistence. She points out that during last year's October Trump tariff threat, Bitcoin plummeted 12% in just 24 hours, while gold reached an all-time high.

Nicolle argues that the recent price surge is largely driven by forced short covering rather than a genuine increase in demand or value. Strategy Chairman Michael Saylor urged investors to continue buying Bitcoin during its upward trend, but his company did not simultaneously increase its holdings. Additionally, the Clarity Act, which aims to regulate the cryptocurrency market through a structural framework, remains stalled due to disagreements over ethics and is unlikely to be revisited by the Senate before mid-November.
