Bitcoin Surges 24%: MicroStrategy Leads Crypto Stocks to New Heights
Bitcoin (BTC) has surged by approximately 24% in one week, reaching a temporary high of $79,500 on August 21. This rally was fueled by three key factors: dual macro and regulatory catalysts, ETF capital inflows returning to U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs, and the largest short squeeze in history.
The U.S. Treasury increased the long-term repo swap line size from $2 billion to $4 billion, pushing down longer-term interest rates. Meanwhile, the SEC proposed a fundraising framework for cryptocurrencies, and Trump convened executives from Coinbase, Robinhood, Ripple, and others at the White House to advance procedural voting on the CLARITY Act in the Senate.
U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded net inflows of $517 million and $606 million on August 19 and 20, respectively. Over $2.75 billion worth of Bitcoin shorts across the network were liquidated on August 19, followed by another $783 million in positions liquidated over the next 24 hours.
With this rally underway, investors are wondering which crypto stocks to buy besides Bitcoin itself. One conclusion is clear: MSTR (MicroStrategy) is the sharpest spear in this rally, with a Beta against Bitcoin's daily returns of 3.55 and an elasticity leading all other stocks in the group.
CRCL (Circle), on the other hand, has been the strongest rebounder over the past month, up by +41.5% over the same period. However, it still down 23% over the past three months due to extreme volatility. HOOD, or Robinhood, had the lowest gains but remains a good option for those looking for downside protection.
