Bitcoin Surges 25% on Short Squeeze and Crypto Optimism
Bitcoin's price surged over 25% this week to an intraday high of $79,500 on Friday, its best level in months. This rally caps one of Bitcoin's most dramatic weeks in years, following a prolonged malaise that had encouraged traders to build up bearish positions.
The token had been stuck grinding between $62,000 and $66,000 for six straight weeks, having fallen over 50% from its all-time high of around $126,000 it reached last year in October. The recent break higher this week led to an episode of forced short covering as traders unwound their bearish positions.
Easier financial conditions and a softer dollar tend to favour riskier assets such as Bitcoin. Regulatory developments also added fuel to the fire, with the US Securities and Exchange Commission proposing lighter registration requirements for crypto issuers and President Donald Trump pushing Congress to pass the Digital Asset Market CLARITY Act.
