Bitcoin Surges 8% on Triggers from US Treasury and SEC
The Bitcoin price surged by over 8% on August 19, reaching its highest level since early June. This rally was driven by three key triggers that occurred within a 24-hour period.
The first trigger was the US Treasury's announcement to double its liquidity support buybacks for longer-dated securities from $2 billion to at least $4 billion per operation. This move led to a decrease in the 30-year Treasury yield, which fell back to 5.189% after reaching its highest level since 2007.
The second trigger was the US Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC) proposal of dedicated token rules that would exempt certain token offerings from full securities registration. The proposed rule would allow startups to raise up to $5 million over four years without registering with the SEC, and offerings of up to $75 million per year could also be exempt.
The third trigger was a crypto summit held at the White House, where industry executives met with President Donald Trump and top regulators. While no concrete decisions were announced, the meeting sent a signal that policy signals across agencies are being aligned.
The price surge was amplified by $1.4 billion in shorts being liquidated within 24 hours, with total liquidations reaching close to $2 billion. This created a short squeeze that pushed the price higher, triggering further liquidations and driving the rally.
