Bitcoin Surges Above $71,000 as Short Liquidations Fuel Rally
Bitcoin has surged above $71,000 in a massive rally fueled by short liquidations. According to CoinGlass data, over $3 billion in crypto positions were liquidated within 24 hours, with approximately $274 million of those being long liquidations.
The market had accumulated substantial bearish positioning during Bitcoin's prolonged period of weakness, making the current move particularly significant. With this acceleration in liquidations creating additional buying pressure, BTC climbed to around $71,700, gaining more than 11% over 24 hours.
The rally has been supported by two major catalysts: the U.S. Treasury's expanded long-term bond buybacks and renewed political momentum around the CLARITY Act. President Donald Trump urged Congress to pass a version of the bill during a White House meeting with crypto industry executives on August 19, which helped improve broader risk sentiment.
However, analysts are warning that the speed of the rally creates a risk of a pullback. A large portion of the move has been driven by forced short covering rather than purely organic spot buying. If Bitcoin fails to hold above its 200-day moving average, traders could see renewed profit-taking and another test of lower support levels.
