Bitcoin Surges Above $75,000 After Surprise Treasury Announcement
Bitcoin's price surged above $75,000 after a surprise Treasury announcement on Wednesday, marking its best week since March 2024. The sudden shift in sentiment was fueled by the doubling of the department's long-duration bond buybacks from $2 billion to at least $4 billion per operation.
The change doesn't take effect until September 9 and runs through November 4, but the announcement sent a signal that the Treasury would step in to support the market. This led to a sharp drop in long-bond yields within minutes, which then rebounded by Thursday morning.
Traders who had shorted Bitcoin were caught off guard, resulting in $3 billion in short positions being liquidated over the following day. The forced liquidations triggered more buying, further pushing up the price, regardless of what bonds were doing at that time.
The Fear & Greed Index jumped from 46 to 62 in a single day and continued to climb to 72 by Friday, indicating a rapid shift from fear to greed among traders. Large holders have been adding billions of dollars in Bitcoin over the past two months, through both the drawdown and bounce.
However, analysts point out that sentiment swings this fast have a history of unwinding just as quickly. The rally also lands in a busier regulatory calendar than crypto has had in years, with several upcoming events that could impact the market.
