Bitcoin Surges Above $75,000 on Treasury Decision and Short Squeeze
The Bitcoin price has surged above $75,000 due to a combination of factors that converged within a 72-hour window. The US Treasury's decision to double its long-term bond buybacks lowered long-end yields and weakened the dollar, reviving the debasement trade.
Traders have nicknamed this move 'QE Lite,' but the more significant read is the fiscal one: the Treasury's action reignited fears of fiscal dominance. This could lead to a sustained price increase if it is seen as a fundamental shift rather than just a yield reaction.
The short squeeze that fueled the rally was massive, with over $2.75 billion in Bitcoin shorts liquidated on Wednesday and a further $783.2 million in liquidations over the following 24 hours. The follow-through liquidations indicate that traders continued to try to short into the move at $72,000 and $74,000 but were repeatedly run over.
The US regulatory environment has also become more favorable for Bitcoin, with the CLARITY Act moving from stalled to scheduled in Congress. This shift in regulatory expectations is a meaningful change that could contribute to the price increase.
