Bitcoin Surges Above $80,000 Amid Treasury-Fueled Macro Shift and ETF Inflows
Bitcoin's price surged above $80,000 in late August, marking its highest point since mid-May. The cryptocurrency posted gains of 20-25% in a single week, with an intraday peak of $81,272.
The move was fueled by a perfect storm of macro and money flows. The U.S. Treasury announced plans to roughly double its government bond buyback operations, scaling purchases to approximately $4 billion per session starting in early September. This would push yields lower and weaken the dollar, historically sending investors toward assets without counterparty risk.
U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs absorbed a significant amount of money, with $1.92 billion in net inflows during the week ending August 21-22. BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust (IBIT) contributed a substantial share of that total, with daily inflows hitting $606 million on August 20.
The short squeeze that accompanied this move was driven by a cascading liquidation of bearish positions. Traders who had bet against Bitcoin or hedged aggressively after the June lows found themselves on the wrong side of the fast-moving market. This resulted in a short squeeze that amplified each leg of the move upward, liquidating billions in bearish bets.
