Bitcoin Surges Above $80,000 as Fed Signals Support and ETF Flows Soar
Bitcoin has surged above $80,000 for the second time this month as investors take advantage of favorable market conditions. The price rally comes despite lingering concerns about inflation and potential interest rate hikes by the Federal Reserve.
The recent jump in Bitcoin's value occurred on a day when equities were rising, yields eased, and the US dollar weakened. Federal Reserve Governor Christopher Waller signaled his support for holding rates steady if inflation continues to cool down, providing a boost to Bitcoin's prospects.
Spot Bitcoin ETFs have seen increased buying activity in August, with the seven-day average intake reaching $290 million per day during the rally. However, Glassnode notes that inflows driven by discrete policy headlines often coincide with local inflection points and may not be sustained.
Liquidity remains thin, which means small shifts in sentiment can have significant impacts on the market. Long-term holders are reportedly eyeing the $83,000 to $86,000 area to take profits, potentially capping near-term rallies.
Analysts remain cautious, with Tony Sycamore from IG Australia suggesting that a short squeeze contributed significantly to August's price jump. Glassnode estimates that positioning is close to flat, and technical support levels are in place around the 200-day moving average at $69,507.
