Bitcoin Surges Above $80K Amid Renewed ETF Demand and Oil Prices Rise on Stalled US-Iran Talks
Global markets experienced significant shifts on Thursday due to developments in artificial intelligence, cryptocurrencies, and commodities. OpenAI and Anthropic issued an open letter urging governments, businesses, and technology firms to prioritize cyber defense against AI-enabled attacks.
The companies, along with over 100 other tech and financial services organizations, emphasized the growing threat of AI-powered cyberattacks and called for increased preparedness. They requested access to their technology, financial support, and training for critical infrastructure defenders.
Bitcoin rebounded as demand for US exchange-traded funds (ETFs) reached $2.6 billion over eight trading sessions, according to Bloomberg data. The cryptocurrency rose 2% to around $80,122, surpassing the $80,000 level for the first time since May.
Oil prices increased after Washington announced it was not currently negotiating with Iran, reducing expectations of a near-term diplomatic breakthrough that could restore energy flows through the Strait of Hormuz. Brent crude rose 2.6% to $90.14 per barrel, while West Texas Intermediate gained 1.9% to $83.81.
