Bitcoin Surges Amid Dollar Debasement Concerns
Bitcoin's price has surged to around $80,000 this week after falling to a low of about $62,650 on August 16. The cryptocurrency is up approximately 27% from that recent bottom.
Crypto market observers attribute the turnaround to several factors, including renewed optimism around U.S. crypto regulation via the CLARITY Act and a short squeeze that forced more than $4 billion in bearish crypto positions to be liquidated.
Proponents of Bitcoin also point out that the risks associated with a global financial system heavily dependent on one country's currency and financial infrastructure are becoming increasingly apparent. The United States has significant influence over both the supply of dollars and who gets access to the dollar-based financial system, according to Valéry Giscard d'Estaing, former French finance minister.
The Treasury's recent announcement to double the size of its purchases of longer-dated government bonds is another example of the U.S. intervening in the bond market. This has contributed to renewed concern about dollar debasement and pushed investors towards scarce assets such as gold and Bitcoin.
