Bitcoin Surges Near $80K as Short Squeeze Ignites Rally
Bitcoin's price surged near $80,000 on Monday, its highest since May, as a short squeeze fueled the rally. The cryptocurrency jumped over 20% in three days, its strongest 3-day rally since 2023.
The short squeeze occurred when traders who had bet against Bitcoin were forced to buy back their positions as the price rose, pushing it even higher. This resulted in more than $4 billion worth of short positions being liquidated.
Jonathan Krinsky, a strategist, noted that this pattern looks familiar, referencing a similar move in January 2023. However, he also warned that the rally may fade and Bitcoin could fall back to its 200-day moving average.
