Bitcoin Surges Past $69k as Crypto Markets Witness Historic Short Squeeze
Cryptocurrency markets witnessed their largest short position liquidation day in history on Wednesday, with over $1 billion in shorts liquidated within a few hours. This historic event saw Bitcoin surge to $69,490, Ethereum skyrocket by nearly 20%, and Solana and XRP each pump up by around 10%. The massive price movement also led to significant liquidations of over $1.92 billion from 126,017 traders in the past 24 hours, as per Coinglass data.
Bitcoin's surge above $68,000 wiped out shorts and cleared liquidity above $68,200, according to trader Michael van de Poppe. He expects a pullback rather than an immediate continuation of the price movement. Van de Poppe views $66,500-$67,000 as a buying zone before a potential move towards $72,000-$73,500.
Trader KillaXBT compared Bitcoin's current 2026 structure with its 2022 bottom, suggesting that a pullback from $68,000-$70,000 could still hold above previous lows. However, the pattern would require BTC to re-enter the range and show clear 4-hour/daily exhaustion; failure to do so would invalidate the fractal.
The move has also sparked optimism among investors, with spot Bitcoin ETFs seeing net inflows of $189.3 million on Tuesday, according to SoSoValue data. This trend is expected to continue, potentially leading to further price increases in the coming days.
