Bitcoin Surges Past $77K on Wave of Short Liquidations and Institutional Inflows
Bitcoin surged past $77,000 on August 21, 2026, marking its best week since March 2023. The price climb was fueled by a combination of short liquidations and institutional inflows.
A wave of short liquidations swept through the market on August 19 and 20, with traders forced to buy back positions to limit losses. This short-covering cascade triggered a sharp rally in Bitcoin's price, with the cryptocurrency jumping as high as $77,976 according to CoinMarketCap.
Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds also contributed to the rally, with data from BingX showing inflows of $297.6 million on August 17 and $189.3 million on August 18. The influx of institutional and retail buyers helped drive up the price of Bitcoin.
