Bitcoin Surges Past $78K Amid Treasury's Massive Cash Reserve Bond Buybacks
Bitcoin's price surged past $78,000 on news that the US Treasury plans to tap into its massive cash reserves for bond buybacks. The sudden jump in Bitcoin's value came as the Treasury's bond-buyback program gained attention, with Secretary Scott Bessent stating he'd like to use the government's nearly $1 trillion cash cushion to help fund the purchases.
The Treasury recently increased its buying of less-liquid older Treasury securities from $2 billion to $4 billion or more per single operation, according to CNBC. However, one issue that has emerged is how the program will be funded, with participants anticipating additional short-term bills being used, whereas longer-term debt was expected to be bought up.
The Treasury's General Account (TGA) now holds approximately $950 billion, exceeding the previous administration's goal of $550-$600 billion. While no figures have been given on how much might be deployed or when such a move may occur, Bessent emphasized that the official auction schedule will not be changed.
The first buyback in the new program is set to take place on September 9, with the goal of maintaining market equilibrium and focusing on economic fundamentals rather than short-term events.
