Bitcoin Surges Past $79,000 as Debasement Trade Fueled Demand
Bitcoin's price continues to rise, reaching levels above $79,000 on Thursday. According to Eric Balchunas, a Bloomberg ETF analyst, this surge is driven by demand for Bitcoin amid market debasement. The US inflation rate and debt of over $40 trillion are fueling this shift in investment strategy.
Debasement trades involve investing in assets that hold their value or appreciate as the purchasing power of traditional currencies declines. Gold and Bitcoin have become popular choices for investors seeking to protect their wealth from market volatility. Balchunas highlighted that institutional demand for these assets is on the rise, with over $7 billion flowing into Gold and Bitcoin Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) in a single week.
Bitcoin's growth as a debasement-resistant asset could be driven by its scarcity and limited supply. The Spent Output Profit Ratio (SOPR), which measures the profit taken by holders, has increased to 1.01, indicating that investors are starting to take profits from their holdings.
