Bitcoin Surges Past $79k: Analysts Debate Cycle Bottom

Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) surged past $79,000 on Tuesday as analysts debated whether the sudden 20% increase signaled a durable cycle bottom or was driven by short liquidations.

A combination of improving fund flows and forced liquidations helped propel Bitcoin toward $80,000, according to Galaxy Digital's head of research Alex Thorn. He noted that roughly $1.9 billion in weekly net inflows into Bitcoin spot ETFs marked their strongest showing since October 2025, while combined crypto product flows exceeded $2.6 billion.

The rally also triggered over $2 billion in short liquidations as heavily positioned bears were caught off guard. Thorn argued that traders had accumulated large short exposure near BTC's 52-week lows while volatility was historically depressed, creating 'dry kindling' for a sharp move once a catalyst emerged.

Thorn attributed the spark to the Treasury's plans to expand purchases of longer-dated government debt, which he said matters more than its label. Bitcoin outperformed gold following the announcement, reviving its 'digital gold' narratives. Thorn suggested that investors already exposed to AI and mega-cap technology stocks could increasingly look toward Bitcoin for an asset with greater potential upside.
