Bitcoin Surges Past $80,000 Amid Debasement Trade Fueled by Treasury Announcement
The recent surge in Bitcoin prices has been attributed to several factors, including the US Department of the Treasury's announcement to double its long-dated bond buyback program. This move has contributed to a sharp turnaround for Bitcoin, which had fallen from its January high of around $95,000 to below $60,000 in late June.
The debasement trade, driven by concerns about national debt and inflation, has also led to increased interest in scarce assets like Bitcoin. Short squeeze and solid ETF inflows have further boosted the cryptocurrency's rally.
BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust ETF (IBIT), Fidelity Wise Origin Bitcoin Fund (FBTC), Bitwise Bitcoin ETF Trust (BITB), and ARK 21Shares Bitcoin ETF (ARKB) are among the spot Bitcoin ETFs that have seen significant inflows. These funds allow investors to gain direct exposure to Bitcoin through traditional brokerage accounts without having to hold or custody the cryptocurrency themselves.
However, certain risks remain, including profit-taking and another bout of volatility following a rapid advance. Exchange-traded fund (ETF) outflows could also weaken the bullish narrative if they reverse course.
