Bitcoin Surges Past $80,000 as Macro Conditions Improve and Regulation Turns More Supportive
The Bitcoin price has rebounded sharply from around $60,000 to over $80,000 in one of its strongest weekly moves in years. This gain of nearly 20% is attributed to a combination of factors, including improving macroeconomic conditions, short covering, renewed regulatory optimism, and stronger demand for U.S.-listed crypto ETFs.
The U.S. Treasury's announcement on August 19 that it would at least double the size of its liquidity-support buybacks for longer-dated Treasuries is seen as a key catalyst. This move helped revive the 'debasement trade', which involves investing in assets viewed as alternatives to traditional currencies due to concerns about large fiscal deficits, rising government debt, and potential intervention in the Treasury market.
Bitcoin's historical sensitivity to interest rates and dollar movements also contributed to its rally. A weaker dollar can strengthen demand for Bitcoin, making it more attractive compared to traditional currencies. Additionally, short sellers who had been betting against Bitcoin were forced to buy the asset as prices began to rise, adding further upward pressure.
Regulatory momentum is another key factor supporting the rebound. President Trump has reinforced his support for crypto market structure legislation, and industry executives have emphasized the importance of making recent regulatory progress more durable through legislation rather than relying on the current administration's policies. The SEC and CFTC are also moving towards more crypto-friendly rules and frameworks under their existing authority.
