Bitcoin Surges Past $80,000 on Dollar Debasement Fears

BTC rose above $80,000 on Tuesday, hitting its highest level since mid-May after US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent moved to calm the bond market. This move revived momentum in the crypto sector and led investors to scramble into assets like gold and Bitcoin.

The US dollar has been bearing the brunt of investor angst due to the Treasury's plan to buy back long-dated bonds, which would cap gains in long-end yields. This has created a supportive macro backdrop for assets like BTC and gold, according to Tim Sun, senior researcher at HashKey Group.

BTC is up 28% so far in August, set for its biggest monthly gain since November 2024, after US President Donald Trump called on Congress to pass a bill that would bring clearer definitions to the growing cryptocurrency sector. Since then, BTC has risen 16%.
