Bitcoin Surges Past $80,000 on Dollar Weakness and Debasement Fears
Bitcoin surpassed $80,000 on Tuesday, reaching its highest level since mid-May, as concerns over a soft US dollar and debasement fears boosted momentum in the cryptocurrency sector.
The surge comes after Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's efforts to calm the bond market revived interest in Bitcoin. The cryptocurrency has risen 16% since President Donald Trump called on Congress to pass a bill defining clearer guidelines for the growing cryptocurrency sector.
Tim Sun, senior researcher at HashKey Group, said that Bessent's messaging reinforced the market's view that policymakers may have a lower tolerance for further long-end yield increases. This 'supportive macro backdrop' has benefited assets like Bitcoin and gold, which has also reached a three-month high.
Geoff Kendrick, global head of digital assets research at Standard Chartered, noted that the Treasury announcement is 'exactly the type of thing bitcoin loves,' as it allows investors to avoid intervention. The move has prompted increased chatter around the debasement trade, where pressure shifts from the bond market to the currency market.
