Bitcoin Surges Past $80K, Sparking New Market Regime Hopes
Bitcoin's move above $80,000 may signal the start of a new market regime, according to GSR Managing Director Andy Baehr. The former Morgan Stanley and Credit Suisse derivatives executive believes the market has shifted into a more supportive structure after months of weak trading activity.
Baehr points to several factors contributing to this change, including returning ETF demand, improving liquidity, and aggressive short liquidations. Digital-asset investment products had suffered $8 billion in withdrawals over eight consecutive weeks before flows reversed, with spot Bitcoin ETFs attracting almost $2 billion over five trading days.
The turnaround is visible in recent U.S. ETF data, with Bitcoin funds taking in $517 million on August 19 and $606 million the following session, helping weekly inflows approach $1.9 billion. BlackRock's IBIT captured $209 million of a $338 million daily inflow as BTC traded above $80,000.
The rally was also amplified by bearish positioning, with roughly $1.06 billion in short positions liquidated in a single day. The U.S. Treasury's decision to expand buybacks of long-dated government bonds helped improve market liquidity and initially pushed long-term yields lower.
