Bitcoin Surges Past $81,000 Amid Short Squeeze and Falling Yields
Bitcoin has been on a remarkable surge, rising above $81,000 for the first time in what appears to be an extended rally. The sudden burst of energy came after months of decline, with prices jumping by over 20% since last week's lows.
The short squeeze is one reason behind this surge, as traders who had bet against Bitcoin scrambled to buy it back as prices jumped, closing out more than $4 billion in bearish positions. This forced buying has given the rally an extra push, contributing to the rapid gains.
Additionally, the U.S. Treasury's decision to buy twice as many longer-term government bonds as before has briefly lowered yields and revived appetite for riskier assets like crypto. As government bond yields fall, investments such as Bitcoin become more attractive by comparison.
The rally is not without its cautionary signs, however. BTIG points out that a similar surge in January 2023 stalled at first and didn't find its footing until near the 200-day moving average, a level traders watch as a gauge of the long-term trend.
