Bitcoin Surges to $74K on ETF Frenzy and Short Squeeze
Bitcoin has reclaimed $74,000 for the first time in 86 days, propelled by a surge in institutional activity. U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs saw over $5.3 billion in trading volume, with BlackRock's IBIT dominating at $4.44 billion.
Fidelity's FBTC came next at $438 million and Grayscale at $208.8 million. Other notable participants included Bitwise, ARK Invest, VanEck, Morgan Stanley, Franklin Templeton, Invesco, Valkyrie, WisdomTree, and Hashdex.
The ETF activity coincided with a 17% jump in Bitcoin's price over two days, adding $11,000 to its market capitalization and making it one of the most significant short squeezes of recent times. Over $3.6 billion in short positions have been liquidated, including $2.75 billion in Bitcoin shorts on Wednesday.
The rally may be attributed to several factors, including the U.S. Treasury Department's decision to double liquidity-support buyback operations and the SEC's latest crypto proposal. A White House meeting between President Donald Trump and prominent crypto executives also contributed to the unexpected move higher.
Bloomberg's Mike McGlone remains bearish on Bitcoin, describing the rally as 'a bounce within the purge.' He argues that institutional investors face unfavorable risk-reward characteristics due to Bitcoin's volatility and correlation with stocks. Additionally, he expects excessive supply in the wider crypto market to lead to a potential roll-over by year-end.
