Bitcoin Surges to $80K Amid Strong Risk Appetite and Institutional Demand
Bitcoin's price surge to $80,000 in August was a significant event in the crypto market. The rally from the mid-$60,000 range was fueled by stronger risk appetite and a weaker dollar, with Bitcoin briefly climbing above $81,000 before pulling back.
The increase in institutional demand for Bitcoin ETFs also contributed to the price surge. Between August 17 and 21, U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded nearly $1.92 billion in net inflows, with BlackRock's IBIT leading the weekly inflows. The total August ETF inflows later crossed $3 billion.
Other cryptocurrencies also saw significant gains in August, including Zcash, which reached its highest level since 2018 after Grayscale advanced plans for a U.S. Zcash ETF. Meme coins such as DOGE and PEPE saw renewed activity, adding billions to the meme sector's market value during the rally.
The month also saw a surge in political tokens, with Official Trump (TRUMP) surging nearly 94% in one week at its August peak before giving back part of the gains. The proposal for new rules by the SEC on certain crypto-asset offerings was another major event, including exemptions for offerings of up to $5 million over four years and up to $75 million annually under enhanced requirements.
