Bitcoin Surges to Three-Month High as Debasement Trade Revives

Bitcoin has surged to a three-month high above $80,000, marking its first time at this level since mid-May. The cryptocurrency's price increase comes after a confluence of bullish signals and a renewed focus on the 'debasement trade'. This trend involves investors seeking safe-haven assets like Bitcoin as a hedge against inflation and currency debasement.

The price surge was driven by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's announcement that the US will step up its bond repurchases to bring down long-term yields. This move sparked a new round of dollar selling, which has bolstered the value of assets like Bitcoin and gold. Analysts point out that Bitcoin was originally created as a way to escape fiat currency debasement and inflation driven by central bank money creation.

The influx of capital into spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds (ETFs) is also contributing to the price increase. Last week, these funds saw their strongest weekly inflow in 10 months, with $1.92 billion pouring in. This surge was led by a single day's inflows on August 20, which reached $606.3 million.

While some traders are optimistic about the future of Bitcoin, others remain skeptical. Analysts have pointed out that the current price increase may be driven by short squeezes rather than sustained demand.
