Bitcoin Surpasses Gold, S&P 500 in Global Adoption
According to analyst Willy Woo, global Bitcoin adoption has reached a significant milestone. Currently, approximately 5% of the world's population owns Bitcoin, surpassing both gold and the S&P 500 in terms of ownership percentage. This shift from a niche asset to mainstream store of value is seen as a crucial turning point for Bitcoin.
The data, based on credible on-chain information and industry surveys mapped onto an S-curve adoption model, shows that India tops the list with an estimated 68 million Bitcoin holders, representing about 4.6% of its population. The U.S. follows closely, with around 50 million owners, accounting for a higher penetration rate of 14%. Vietnam leads globally in penetration at 17%, while China, despite its crypto ban, still counts an estimated 33 million holders.
Woo emphasized that the comparison should focus on direct investment use, noting that Bitcoin serves as a monetary hedge in countries facing capital controls or hyperinflation. He also warned that the trajectory of adoption matters more than the current headline, and that if it climbs toward 50%, it could signal a structural shift, what he termed the 'separation of money and state.'
