Bitcoin Thief Malone Lam Faces 20-Year Sentence in Historic RICO Case

Malone Lam, the alleged ringleader of a massive Bitcoin theft, is set to appear in court on Tuesday for a plea agreement hearing. The young suspect and his co-defendants allegedly swiped over 4,100 Bitcoin from one person, valued at more than $230 million at the time of the theft.

The group's scheme, which operated between October 2023 and March 2025, involved posing as representatives from Google and Gemini to trick victims into granting remote access to their accounts. This is not a breach of security protocols, but rather a case of social engineering that exploited the credibility of these brands.

Law enforcement has managed to freeze or recover approximately $70 million tied to the scheme, leaving around $193 million unaccounted for. The Lam case marks the first time RICO has been applied to a Bitcoin-related criminal enterprise, with charges including racketeering conspiracy, wire fraud, and money laundering.

Lam faces up to 20 years in federal prison if convicted on each of these counts. His co-defendants have already pleaded guilty, receiving sentences ranging from 70 to 78 months.
