Bitcoin's price briefly touched $80,000 on Monday for the first time since May as short liquidations surpassed $220 million. The cryptocurrency's powerful August recovery has seen it climb by around 25% for the month, with analysts warning that BTC needs to sustain higher levels before challenging the bearish market structure.

The move towards $80,000 triggered another wave of short liquidations, with over $220 million in crypto short positions wiped out over 24 hours according to CoinGlass data. Traders betting on further downside were forced to close their positions, adding additional buying pressure and accelerating the rally.

However, analysts are cautious about whether spot demand can replace this forced buying, particularly after Bitcoin experienced one of the largest short squeezes of the year with over $3 billion in short positions wiped out during the initial August rally. Rekt Capital notes that a sustained move above the 50-week exponential moving average (EMA) around $77,251 is crucial to strengthening the bullish case.
