Bitcoin Trapped Between $75,000 and $80,000 Ahead of Derivatives Settlement
The price of Bitcoin is stuck between $75,000 and $80,000 as it prepares for a massive derivatives settlement on Deribit. The settlement, which will take place at 08:00 UTC on August 28th, has left investors wondering whether the price will be pinned near these strikes or accelerate through them.
A total of 81,700 Bitcoin options worth around $6.4 billion are set to expire on Deribit this Friday, with a large concentration of reported call exposure at the $75,000 and $80,000 strikes. This has created a test for whether dealer hedging will dampen or amplify any potential moves.
The net gamma, which is crucial in determining how dealers adjust their hedges around heavily populated strikes, remains unclear. As a result, it's difficult to predict with certainty what will happen on Friday, although some traders are positioning themselves for either a breakout through the $80,000 level or a retest of the lower concentration at $75,000.
Bitcoin is currently trading between $78,514 and $80,000, with the price action being closely watched ahead of the Deribit settlement. With around 6.1% of the reported $6.4 billion expiry concentrated near these two strikes, investors are bracing themselves for a potentially volatile Friday.
