Bitcoin Treated Like a 'Liquidity Smoke Alarm', Says Veteran Investor

Veteran investor Lawrence Lepard has described Bitcoin as a 'liquidity smoke alarm', suggesting it's more sensitive to short-term liquidity conditions than long-term currency debasement. This is in contrast to gold, which he views as 'pure debasement insurance'. Lepard explained that despite growing M2 money-supply growth, Bitcoin's price hasn't kept pace because system-wide liquidity is currently tight.

Lepard also expects the Federal Reserve to be forced into another round of money printing within the next 16-18 months, which he believes will change the current liquidity conditions and potentially benefit assets like Bitcoin. He pointed to the market's reaction during the COVID-19 crash as a precedent for how this gap eventually closes, with gold responding first before Bitcoin.

Lepard's framing is consistent with comments from FLOP Labs CEO Arthur Hayes, who also referred to Bitcoin as 'the global liquidity smoke alarm'. However, not all analysts agree on the importance of M2 metrics in gauging financial assets. Investor and liquidity expert Michael Howell has stated that M2 can give 'very false signals' and should not be used to gauge financial assets.
